Austin artist to paint mural in France ahead of Summer Olympics.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Artist Fabian Rey is adding a splash of color to Austin’s sister city in France ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Austin-based muralist Fabian Rey is heading to Angers, France as part of the Echappée d’Art project, an international showcase. He’ll be painting a mural in the French city from Sept. 25 through Oct. 11 in an effort “to spruce up the city in time for the Summer Olympics,” he told KXAN.
The City of Angers’ Echappée d’Art program offers artists from around the world the opportunity to come “breathe art into the streets.”

Some of Rey’s previous work includes the 2023 Tifo for Austin FC’s first home game of the season at Q2 Stadium, the new Austin PBS building and the wrap around CapMetro’s first electric bus.

Echappées d’Art, meaning "Art is in the Street," is an annual street art initiative by the City of Angers. It invites five artists from all around the world to contribute to the city's vibrant artistic landscape with all-inclusive mural creations. The project underscores Angers' commitment to cultural exchange and the universality of art.

I am truly honored for being chosen to go represent Austin in Angers, France.

Je t'aime Austin!

This is what the french newspaper wrote:
Celebrating the Franco-American friendship with its twin city Austin, Angers will welcome the muralist Fabian Rey for the creation of a fresco in a unique and colorful style. Also a photographer, artistic director and art teacher, the multifaceted artist puts his creativity at the service of diversity, placing openness to the world and to others at the heart of his work.

I’ve always been a big fan of Joan Miró’s work, that’s why I feel honored to have my artwork “United States of Immigrants” next to an original Joan Miró painting at a collectors home here in Austin.

Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893 and was inspired by the interlocking shapes and facets of Picasso's cubist art. He was a Catalan painter who combined abstract art with Surrealist fantasy. His paintings are a balance between Earth and Sky, where the Earth represents reality and the Sky represents Dreams. Miró was a prolific and influential multimedia artist who developed a unique visual language and never lost his flair for experimentation.

It’s very cool and inspiring to be next to this legend. Gracias Austin por apreciar mi arte y por todo el amor!

I am honored and humbled to be included in this fantastic 500+ page book by @atxurbanart documenting the history of graffiti and street art in Austin. This book documents decades of artistic evolution on the streets of Austin, Texas.

ATX Urban Art is a first-of-its-kind book showcasing the city’s graffiti, street art, murals, and mosaics from the 1950s to today. This book shines a spotlight on Austin artists at a time when the rapid growth of our city makes the preservation of the works from early pioneers and those carrying the torch today so important.

Brought to you by JMuzac and his tight-knit team of dedicated photographers and designers: Justin Ebel, Zoe Axelrod, and Tony Moreno, alongside dozens of valuable contributions from participating artists, photographers, and documentarians, ATX Urban Art promises to be the most definitive urban art book of our city for years to come.

OUTSIDE IN Pop-up Art Show featuring 9 local artists in the heart of Downtown Austin.

“Outside In” was conceived by a group of independent artists to promote creativity and community during a time when so many individuals are isolated. Featuring an amazing lineup of muralists, street artists and fine artists, the show is focused on bringing the city’s outdoor vibe inside for an immersive experience in a unique and temporary exhibition. The current pandemic has shifted our perspectives and redefined our world. We all feel like outsiders looking in sometimes, and these creators believe that loneliness and depression can be fought through the use of art.

Property owner Janis Daemmrich reached out to Raasin in the Sun at the end of last year after her tenant went out of business due to COVID-19. She proposed letting a group of artists utilize the space in the meantime while the commercial real estate market was at a standstill. It was then that Raasin in the Sun tapped Something Cool Studios to curated and produce a unique art experience.

My new mural in Austin “Better Together” made it to the Austin Chronicle today. (February 28, 2020). It’s cool to see my work in one of the coolest newspaper in Austin, Texas.
